Summary of “The Plot Against the Principality of Sealand”

Reineck was a socialite who loved showing off his Sealand passport and was said to have diplomatic plates from Sealand on his car.
He declared Roughs Tower the Principality of Sealand on September 2, 1967, and installed himself as prince and his wife Joan as princess.
The family elected to stay at the fort after the British government green-lit commercial radio and brought pirate radio to an end, and the Principality of Sealand quickly became the foremost micronation in the world, influencing people on every continent who now claim their bedroom, neighborhood or disputed territory as a country of their own.
One of the gang’s primary sources of income was the online sale of Sealandic passports, nationality cards, and degrees from universities supposedly based on the Principality of Sealand.
Sealand’s true prince, Michael Bates, was tipped off to these strange goings-on around the same time, when a friend asked him about the documents for sale through the Sealand website.
Trujillo Ruiz reportedly first learned about Sealand while working in Germany for a man named Friedbert Ley, who had launched his own Sealand fan website in 1998 and asked Trujillo Ruiz to set up a Spanish branch office of the Sealandic government.
The Principality of Sealand greatly reduced the number of passports it issued following the scams of the 1990s and stopped the practice altogether after 9/11. Today the Principality does offer a legitimate way to become a citizen of Sealand.
Michael takes only intermittent trips out to the fort these days, but Sealand is always occupied by at least one armed caretaker, lest any of the events of its bellicose history repeat themselves.

Back in Sealand Michael was working on the fort alone when a helicopter landed.

All in all, despite the genuine headaches that came with criminals trafficking on the Principality’s name, the saga makes for a chapter in Sealand’s history no less eventful than those of any of its macronational neighbors.

Summary of “The Fight for the Right to Drive”

In March, 2018, General Motors announced that it would invest a hundred million dollars in a new car called the Cruise AV. On the outside, the Cruise resembles an ordinary car.
“The majority of people who are fans of cars in this era want to be able to work on their own cars,” Bradley Brownell, one of Radwood’s co-founders, told me.
At Radwood, he said, he had become a member of the Human Driving Association, an organization aiming to protect people’s freedom of movement and right to drive their own cars.
In his book “Machines That Think: The Future of Artificial Intelligence,” from 2018, Walsh predicts that, by 2050, autonomous vehicles will be so safe that we won’t be allowed to drive our own cars.
“The big spike in distracted-driving traffic accidents and fatalities in the past several years has been from people texting and driving. The argument that the cars themselves are the problem is not really looking at the correct issue. We would be substantially safer if we put cell-phone-jamming devices in cars. And we already have that technology.” Like Roy, she strongly disputes both the imminence and the safety of driverless technology.
“On his way to Radwood from New York, Roy was pulled over for speeding, in the BMW M5 that he’d raced in the Cannonball Run.” At the meet-up, he placed an informational stand for the H.D.A. between his car and a kiosk for Hagerty Classic Car Insurance.
“We’re a nonpartisan, apolitical lobbying group. We want to protect the right to own a car and to have a steering wheel.”
“Even if cars were one-hundred-per-cent safe-even if they were free-they would still want to own one. There’s something happening here beyond a car.”

Summary of “How to stop apologizing”

Though often attributed to women, apologizing isn’t just a female problem.
What makes some of us fall into this counterproductive habit? It might be performance anxiety, such as our first day on a new job, or when we lack confidence in our ability to run with the “Big dogs.” It’s almost as if we’re apologizing for taking up space, which is no way to make a good impression on a job or with a client.
The over-apology habit may begin innocently when we spontaneously apologize for a real offense.
If you’re constantly apologizing for what you can’t control, try this: “I know I’ve had to reschedule this meeting several times. Thank you for understanding.”
Case study: How to spot when you do need to apologize.
Someone who knows when and how to apologize appropriately has a huge advantage in the empathy column.
Try taking a friend or trusted coworker into your confidence about what you’re trying to accomplish, and agree on a high sign she can give you if she hears you apologizing unnecessarily.
Bottom line: Don’t apologize unnecessarily-know how to recognize when a sincere apology is necessary.

Summary of “Siegfried & Roy’s Animal Handler Breaks Silence on Tiger Mauling, Alleges Cover-Up”

When Mantacore – a 400-pound, 7-foot-long striped white male tiger – bit and held Roy Horn in his mouth during a performance at Las Vegas’ Mirage hotel 15 years ago, animal handler Lawrence was there, grabbing the tiger, desperately attempting to pull the cat back by the furry nape of his neck.
While the world long ago moved on, no longer entranced or appalled or amused by the Siegfried & Roy spectacle gone wrong, Lawrence can’t.
Lawrence had worked his way up at the Siegfried & Roy show – which he cold-called when he moved to town in 1995 – through long hours of scrubbing kennels, learning critical illusion setups and bonding with the cats.
“Many of the handlers thought that Roy was treating the cats more like props than he was respecting them for who they were,” Lawrence explains.
“I had been yelled at by Siegfried on a few occasions. His favorite phrase was, ‘Are you trying to ruin me?’ He would later apologize and explain that, because he and Roy were on the marquee, they couldn’t make mistakes onstage.” Lawrence explains that Horn in particular hated it when handlers were seen.
Lawrence lost his grip and found himself trailing behind the tiger and his boss’ motionless body as the cat dragged him offstage.
Backstage, Lawrence caught up with the cat and grabbed him by his tail, while his handling supervisor straddled Mantacore and jammed both of his index fingers into his mouth.
Lawrence, Alicia and their three kids moved to Kansas, where he’d grown up with a poster of his idol, celebrated animal trainer Gunther Gebel-Williams, above his bed.

Summary of “What ‘Godless’ Says About America”

What can the Western, that hoary, craggy old relic, a staple of TCM movie marathons and Disneyland saloon experiences, say about life in contemporary America? Godless, written and directed by Scott Frank for Netflix, and executive produced by Steven Soderbergh, is a gorgeous, slyly subversive affirmation of the genre’s power, even if it isn’t quite the “Feminist Western” it was marketed as.
The series is built around an inevitable showdown between Frank Griffin and Roy Goode-a battle between Goode and evil.
Roy is his protegĂ© turned mortal enemy, an orphan whom Frank unofficially adopted as his favorite son, and whose desertion precipitated Frank’s most heinous act yet: the murder of an entire town, the wreckage of which is detailed in the opening scene.
“Roy Goode betrayed me, and I will kill any man, woman, or child who harbors him,” Frank tells a terrified newspaper editor in the second episode.
Frank is the dark core of the story, pitted against Roy, against Marshal Cook, and against Bill McNue, La Belle’s sheriff, whose deputy is a gangly kid named Whitey Winn.
“You are no man of God!” her husband cries out, observing Frank’s dog collar.
There are groups of men wearing buffalo heads who traffic children and violate women, and Mormons dressed as Native Americans who killed Frank’s parents, raped his sister, and then adopted young Frank, teaching him that “Things were purified with blood.” Frank’s own band of brothers is made up of misfits whom he’s saved from horrific situations and taken up as family.
In one scene, Frank even steps into a house that a town has abandoned, helping the residents, who’ve been struck by an infectious fever.
